The Khadi Koti: 6 Ways to Style India’s Most Underrated Layer This Festive Season

One layer changes everything. Add a khadi koti (waistcoat/Nehru jacket) over a plain kurta and you go from “just got home” to wedding-ready in five seconds. It is the single highest-return piece in an Indian man’s wardrobe — and almost nobody uses it properly.

With Navratri, Diwali and wedding season ahead, here are six koti looks you can build from pieces you already own — plus the handspun, chemical-free kotis we make at Feel Weaves.

Why a khadi koti and not a blazer?

  • It breathes. Handspun khadi lets air through — you can wear it through a whole reception without sweating like you would in polyester lining.
  • No lining, no chemicals. Our kotis are unlined, chemical-free and hypoallergenic. No azo dyes, no formaldehyde finishes.
  • It works over anything. Kurta, plain shirt, even a tee — the koti carries the outfit.
  • It travels. Roll it into a bag; khadi creases are part of the character.

Look 1 — White kurta + embroidered koti (the wedding standard)

The safest, sharpest festive combination there is. Keep the kurta plain white and let the embroidery on the koti do the talking. Add mojris and you are done.

Look 2 — Undyed natural khadi, head to toe

Tonal dressing is the most elegant thing you can do with natural khadi. Match undyed kurta and koti, and the texture becomes the detail.

This is the underrated one. Wear a plain white khadi shirt to work, keep a striped koti in the car, and you are dressed for dinner or a puja without going home to change.

How to buy the right koti size

  1. Size to your shirt, not your blazer. Kotis sit closer to the body — take your usual shirt size.
  2. Shoulder seam should end at your shoulder bone, not past it.
  3. Length: the hem should cover your belt line by an inch or two.
  4. Khadi shrinks slightly on first wash — wash cold, dry in shade, and it stays true.
