The Men’s Khadi Kurta Guide: How to Choose, Fit and Style a Handmade Kurta Set for Diwali and Wedding Season

Every Indian man owns at least one kurta. Most of them sit in the cupboard for eleven months, come out for one festival, and go back in because they felt stiff, hot or just a little wrong. The kurta itself is rarely the problem. The fabric, the fit and the pairing usually are.

This guide is a practical, no-nonsense look at the men’s khadi kurta: how a good one should fit, how to choose between plain and embroidered, white and natural raw, and how to style one kurta set five different ways so it earns its place in your wardrobe through Diwali, the wedding season and beyond. Every piece shown is from Feel Weaves: 100% handmade, hypoallergenic and chemical-free.

Why khadi makes the best kurta

A kurta is a long garment worn for long hours: pujas, family lunches, wedding functions that run late into the night. That is exactly where fabric matters. Hand-spun khadi has an uneven, open weave that lets air move through it, absorbs sweat instead of trapping it, and softens with every wash. It also holds its shape with a gentle, natural texture, so even a simple kurta looks considered rather than plain. Because our pieces are chemical-free, there are no stiff finishes or harsh dyes resting against your skin all evening.

Getting the fit right: 4 checks before you buy

  • Shoulders first. The shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder bone. Too far out and the kurta looks borrowed; too far in and it pulls across the back.
  • Length to the knee (or just above). Knee length is the classic, festive proportion. Mid-thigh feels more modern and works better with jeans. Below the knee can shorten shorter frames.
  • Room at the chest and hips. You should be able to sit cross-legged at a puja without the side slits straining. Khadi looks best with a little ease, not skin-tight.
  • Sleeves to the wrist bone. Full sleeves should end at the wrist so they can be rolled twice for a relaxed look.

Handmade khadi can settle slightly after the first wash, so keep a little allowance. Our Khadi Size & Fit Guide explains exactly how to measure.

White embroidered kurta sets: for pujas, weddings and Diwali

Nothing looks more festive than crisp white with fine embroidery. White suits every skin tone, photographs beautifully under diya light, and lets the handwork do the talking. Keep accessories minimal: a good pair of juttis or kolhapuris and a watch is enough.

Natural raw kurta sets: the everyday-to-occasion workhorse

Natural raw khadi keeps the fabric’s undyed, earthy colour. It is more forgiving than white (no panic over a drop of chai), looks great in daylight, and moves easily from a Sunday family lunch to an office celebration. If you are buying just one kurta set this season, this is the safest choice.

Add a koti: one kurta, many looks

The koti (Nehru-style jacket) is the fastest way to turn an everyday kurta into an occasion outfit. Contrast is the rule: a striped or indigo koti over a white kurta, or an embroidered white koti over natural raw. On cooler November evenings it adds a light layer of warmth too. Rethink the bottom half

Your kurta set comes with matching bottoms, but swapping them is how you multiply outfits. A natural raw kurta with a darker khadi pant looks relaxed and modern; a short kurta with straight pants works for casual Fridays. Keep the pant slim-straight, not skinny, so the kurta hem falls cleanly.

One kurta set, five occasions

  • Diwali puja: white embroidered kurta set, juttis, nothing else.
  • Wedding sangeet: same kurta + indigo or heritage striped koti.
  • Office festive day: natural raw kurta + matching pant + loafers.
  • Family lunch: kurta with a contrast khadi pant, sleeves rolled twice.
  • Travel day: kurta untucked over a relaxed pant; it breathes on long journeys and does not cling.

Caring for your khadi kurta

  • Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, inside out to protect embroidery.
  • Wash whites separately and avoid bleach; sun-dry whites briefly and dry coloured pieces in shade.
  • Iron while slightly damp for the crispest finish, but avoid pressing directly on embroidery.
  • Store folded with a little air around it, not sealed in plastic, so the cotton can breathe.

A good khadi kurta is not a once-a-year outfit. Chosen well and styled smartly, it becomes the most comfortable thing you own for every celebration that matters.
